I Am What I Am

Guns save lives, and it’s a constitutional right of our citizens.

Oh, thank goodness!

After two days in a row of a lockdown or near-lockdown on my campus due to the threat or perceived threat of a person carrying a weapon, it’s nice to see that legislators in twelve states are considering the virtues of more guns rather than fewer guns on college campuses.

At last, we’ll be able to answer the pressing question, will students’ long national nightmare of not being able to bring a Glock to my office hours finally be over?

You know, for protection.

One thing I know for sure is that we ought not to listen to Anthony Daykin, the police chief at the University of Arizona. That turkey said that “his officers would be at a loss if they arrived at a shooting scene in a lecture hall holding hundreds of students and found scores of people pointing, and possibly shooting, weapons at one another.”

But, honestly, what does he know about situations like these?

You know who we ought to listen to? I’d recommend Ashlyn Lucero, “a political science student at Arizona State University who has served in the Marine Corps, is the daughter of a sheriff and grew up hunting”:

“I think that every person has the right to bear arms no matter what the circumstances” … Ms. Lucero carries her Glock pistol whenever possible and would carry it on campus if she could. “If I’m going out to eat somewhere, I usually have a gun with me always,” she said. “It’s just one of those things that you never know what’s going to happen.”

Going out for dinner is dangerous, yes. But far less dangerous would be a restaurant where everyone is armed to the teeth. I think we can agree on that.

You know what else we can agree on? If students are allowed to carry guns on my campus, everyone who enrolls in one of my classes will be getting an A from that point forward regardless of the amount or quality of the work handed in. In the past, some students have gotten pretty worked up about my assignments, requirements, and grading standards … but I’ll happily jettison all of those things and just focus on giving them what they want: an easy A that doesn’t lead to anyone getting hurt or learning.

Doesn’t it make you feel so safe knowing it could be possible for a kid to pull out a gun because you didn’t give them the mark they wanted? This is ridiculous. Who thinks of this rubbish?

Not to mention the likelihood of accidental shootings like the one that happened at my alma mater a few weeks ago. Alcohol + guns = very, very bad. But no one really drinks in college, right?

A well regulated militia = college students with guns, absolutely
